The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

UPDATED: CIGAR P4 PLAYS ADDED TO GULFSTREAM AND TAMPA; MORE IN HRI VIDEO CORNER

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL, December 3, 2021 – Don’t think of this weekend’s racing as Thanksgiving leftovers. Rather consider it the final leg of a fortnight festivus.

Actually, this weekend is much bigger from a racing perspective than was last black Friday and Saturday.

A final way is the cliché about doors closing and others opening. The Grade 1 Cigar Mile and three supporting stakes brings down the curtain on the traditional NYRA year. Aqueduct begins its winter session next week.

A great majority of the good New York horses are headed this way to coincide with the official opening Gulfstream Park’s Championship Meet on Friday, which also jump-starts the 2021-22 Oaklawn Park stand.

Saturday’s Gulfstream program features the always competitive Claiming Crown card: Starter Allowances Are Us, replete with large fields and a myriad of betting options.

Tampa Bay Downs kicks off its 3-year-old series with two restricted sprints for juveniles, one for each sex at six furlongs. Out west, Los Al will mark time until Santa Anita’s lid-lifter the day after Christmas.

We have started our handicapping research and are currently reviewing race videos, in addition to the traditional angles associated with the process of course.

Our major focus, as hinted above, will be on Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park. Obviously, we also will research noteworthy Tampa Bay Downs and Oaklawn Park events.

If you can’t wait for Saturday, there’s always Australia tonight.

  1. Been a really entertaining NYRA Mile card so far. Additionally, the aqueduct turf courses are really terrific – glad weather has held up to where they are getting full run. It’s a shame there is no racing on Monday: it’s supposed to be 65 degrees here.

    1. Ditto.

And if there were racing Monday, I might have been able to make up for Saturday’s personally poor results.

  2. Kinda getting the feeling that the Aqueduct jock’s room must be a powder keg at this point. The alpha dogging thing on the track by a certain jock might be getting a bit out of hand – this is vintage Cordero line pushing

  3. Thought Papa was far more sophisticated than the courage leader. Will have something to say in Sunday’s column, Stay tuned.
