The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

We normally don’t go looking for trouble in maiden claiming events with several first-time starters but Friday’s finale appears more of a take what comes easily situation. Juveniles going two turns on synthetic makes it compelling.

Early line favorite Never Say Know (2-1) is going to be a tough out and value may be available given it’s the colt’s first time on synth after five starts even if he’s dropping to the maiden-claiming ranks for the first time a 21% for Brendan Walsh.

Other positive signs are his 27% record with beaten favorites, he reaches out for hot-riding Emisael Jaramillo and sire No Nay Never is a prolific synthetic sire, hitting at a 35% rate. The sample is not large but adequate enough to trust, according to Thoro-Graph sire stats.

Furthermore he’s fast, experienced, and his best effort was an off-the-pace try here at Indiana Grade in June, likely the tack here. Find replay for JUN 24, Race 2 to see if you agree. A real chance at 2-1 is fair value in this spot. We’re taking him straight, no price restrictions.

Other live quinella horses in the Friday finale include fast working, proper-level entrant California Frolic (9-2) for Team Joseph/Gonzalez, and competitive-figure rival Solar Tap (4-1) also making maiden-claiming debut with sufficient synth pedigree for Michael Stidham but saddled with a poor outside draw.

Super-exotics players should add well-connected, sharp-blowout newcomer Astral Weeks (12-1), the longer uncoupled Stidham, to their mix.
