The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Chad Brown’s coming to town with a Giant’s Causeway gelding to make a racing and turf debut with Economic Policy (5-2) for the Horse of the Year Klaravich Stables team and names Antonio Gallardo.

Think he’s live? Yeah, me too.

But when he arrives in Oldsmar, the Tampa Bay 2019-20 team of Arnaud Delacour and Daniel Centeno will be waiting with Stella Thayer’s homebred Commence (3-1), an excellent second debut here on DEC 28, RACE 10, and will be looking for revenge.

Check out the Tampa Bay Video by clicking on the Tampa Bay Downs link on the HRI homepage which will take you to their Replay Center and see that race for yourself. It’s not complicated for me; simply opting for experience. A race over the course is an added bonus.

This maiden turf mile for three-year-olds gets even more interesting with a little imagination. The video will show Commence racing in spots in deep stretch but also finishing strongest and galloping out in front of the even-money winner, a Brown-Gallardo production.

Note, too, that Indy Ride (4-1), the pace setter that day, could be a speed danger and value if they let him get away soft, which seems unlikely with Gallardo and Centeno keeping a close on on the clock. Meanwhile, I am tempted to use Tiz Envy (12-1) to get a vertical slice of this.

He showed little in a turf sprint debut here JAN 10, RACE 7, but did have some gas on the turn but not was abused in the final furlong when victory was out of reach. He returned to breeze 5 furlongs nine days later, blew out sharply five days after that, and here he is, another five days later.

So the temptation–only at double digit odds–is since he’s bred to go a lot farther than five furlongs on his top side and gets a switch to a turf ace, patient Jose Ferrer, his return for the Big Apple connections of Gary Contessa and Lady Sheila Stable is a little interesting.

We’re taking Commence to win, no price restrictions, an exacta box with the Chad newcomer, but also using Indy Ride in the exacta mix and a sprinkling of Tiz Envy into the super-exotic verticals.
