GOING GULFSTREAM – JAN 31

Today’s fifth race on the Hallandale lawn for older optional/preliminary allowance types appears loaded with live contenders.

Chad Brown saddles a pair that could win it, including favorite Delahaye (5-2) who broke maiden with style in his NY finale at 3.

And Jimmy Toner sends out Texas Shuffle (4-1) who has improved and sports solid figures on the Thoro Graph scale since the barn change. He’s 26% efficient when giving a leg up to Jorge Ruiz.

Leading trainer Saffie Joseph send out a pair of 10-1 chances and of these two, Pawky is preferred.

Exiting a key race stakes and freshened awaiting this meet, Pawky repeats a winning synth-to-turf pattern, is better drawn than his mate and gets the services of stable mainstay Edgard Zayas.

Couple those with a 26% strike rate with 90-days + layups, and a perfect distance mark of 2-for-2 and a harp 3F blowout that was sixth fastest of 40 peers to work the week of JAN 26 and he is worthy play.

Taking Pawky to win at 5-1 or greater, and key boxing trifectas 1-2 with the Brown pair including mate Party On Girl (7-2), Texas Shuffle, and the “other” Saffie, Tamarindo, with Tyler in the boot.

  1. Can you explain what this bet looks like?

    My guess would be 2,3,4/2,3,4/5,9,11

I understand a box but not a key box.

Thanks for all your great writing..

  2. Hey O.P. Thanks for your query.

A “key” anything means taking one horse and building around it.

    Thus, today’s ticket, after scratches, would look like this after using Pawky 1-2, i.e. first and second: 4 / 2.5.9.10 / 2.5.9.10 and 2.5.9.10 / 4 / 2.5.9.10. Each trifecta sequence cost $6 for a 50-Cent play.

A key-box exacta, at a $1 minimum, using Pawky first and second, would be cheaper, with less degree of difficulty: 4 / 2.5.9.10 and 2.5.9.10 / 4, at a cost of $8. Plus a straight wager for an amount of your choosing.

Never ignore the straight pool unless the off odds are unacceptable. Sadly, because betting syndicates get unfair special access to pool information for last-minute wagering, t overwhelminghe majority of bettors don’t know if the horse is playable until after the pools close.

That’s why we have called for fixed-odds wagering for the past two years.

Meanwhile, after all this, sure would be nice to collect when today’s race goes official.

    Hope this helped, JP
