The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Marc Lawrence, — So, how intelligent is the latest craze in artificial intelligence? More dazzlingly than one might assume. Remember, though, ChatGPT gathers information, mainly via the internet, at lightning speed and reports its findings. However, it notifies all info it finds, whether accurate or not. And therein lies the drawback. It does not think for itself; it merely regurgitates what it discovers.

For example, when posed with the question, ‘How do NFL teams that finished last in their division typically fare the following season?’ it provides the kind of response you might expect from a politically savvy candidate backed by a billionaire—something not necessarily what you want to hear, but instead what you’re likely to hear.

This was its answer: NFL teams that finished last in their division typically have varying outcomes in the following season. There’s no set rule for how they will perform, as many factors can influence their success or failure, including changes in personnel, coaching staff, injuries, draft picks, and offseason acquisitions. Some teams use their low finish as motivation to improve and make significant strides in the next season. In contrast, others may continue to struggle due to ongoing issues or challenges within the organization. Ultimately, a team’s performance that finished last in its division one season is unpredictable and depends on numerous variables.

However, when I pose the same question to my proprietary “Well-Oiled Machine,” it informs me that NFL teams transitioning from first to worst in their division were mainly middle-tier teams the following season, posting a record of 44-56 straight up and 42-56-2 against the spread in divisional matchups the next season – including a 14-28-1 ATS record as division favorites.

And therein lies the primary disparity in artificial intelligence. It’s prudent to discard anything artificial and opt for the real deal instead when it boils down to it.
