As has been suggested to me through the years, the NTRA Poll should be representative of leading candidates for Horse of the Year.
Further, after a separate Poll for three-year-olds concludes immediately following the Belmont Stakes, there really is no hard place for the division except in the national rankings.
Besides, certainly a three year old can be recognized as Horse of the Year, generally providing, in most cases, that it beats older horses in a Grade 1, preferably the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Prior to this week, we did not include Maximum Security in the “open” Top 10, but we feel his Haskell victory must be recognized. He debuts on our open ballot at #7.
We recognize that our #1 lacks a victory beyond one mile. But we also consider his win in the Met Mile to be the best performance by a dirt horse this year.
