Australia’s Leading Trainer Facing Fraud Charges

Think Santa Anita officials were too tough, rushing to judgment on Jerry Hollendorfer? A half world away–even if comparing euthanized apples to medicated oranges—know that Australia’s leading trainer, Ben Currie, has been arrested, charged with fraud for his alleged use of performance enhancing drugs.

Currie is serving a seven-year suspension on violations when numerous horses were detected to have been treated with illegal drugs. Racing authorities imposed sanctions based on multiple charges ranging from Illegal race day treatments to positive findings on wipes, including cocaine.

Currie was arrested following an investigation by Australian police, the fraud charges stemming from their country’s equivalence of tampering with a sporting event. Currie entered a black sedan after leaving the police station and refused to answer questions from reporters. Sound familiar?
