To me the big story at Belmont is that the live feed on the NYRA app is now linked to NYBETS and RTN. Whether this development is part of a strategic business plan or just greed, it provides another “nail in the coffin” for my enthusiasm on a game I have followed for 50 years. After a ridiculous increase through the years of the cost of the Racing Form, the slow gouging at Saratoga and other disincentives in racing (Belmont Stakes day last year with $40 parking and $25 admission and no coolers is a good example), fans like me will gradually leave the sport. My absent handle between $25k-50k per year will not be noticed but there comes a time when you say , ok you beat me. For different reasons, harness racing (Yonkers) lost me some time ago with a 62 year old trainer out of nowhere becoming the leading trainer and today having a super sibling driver/trainer team that improve horses just like Popeye having a can of spinach. You’re terrific and kudos for carrying on your enthusiastic fight but I’m tapping out.
