The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing


On the first Saturday of the Championship meet, Florida bred colts and fillies complete the Florida Sire series, the first time these juveniles will be racing around a second turn.

Since the series began several months ago, trainer Jose D’Angelo has been saying how he can’t wait to run Bentornato long. D’Angelo and the colt will have that opportunity in Saturday’s fifth, the In Reality Stakes.

A son of Valiant Minister, from the Put It Back mare Her Special Way, he will have to get whatever stamina comes to beat from his grandsires as sire and dam sport average winning distances of 6.2 and 6.3 furlongs, respectively.

Then you can only beat the competition that is lined up in the gate against you.

If Bentornato hopes to stretch his undefeated career to five straight, he will have to clean up his gate manners. In his last three starts, while not entirely his fault, there have been incidents at the break.

On the plus side, he is the fastest entrant on the Thoro Graph scale and never has taken a backward step.

Taking Bentornato (2-1) to win but never mind the short-odds win play. Making an exacta box with Brawn (10-1) who broke maiden on debut around two turns on Tapeta Track, extra ticket with favorite on top,
