The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Edison Hatter, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double — Friday April 21

Race 1:

1   LEGATO – Secured a good spot early last week against similar on the ship in from Freehold, but gave way rapidly in the back half of the mile. Finds a similar spot tonight and would look to need a big improvement to win in this one.

2   ROCK TO GLORY – Raced well three back against similar with the right set up and trip to finish third and has had success here in the past. Recent form isn’t great, but draws inside and can catch a piece here at a price.

3   STOLEN ART – Stayed flat last week here on the big track after making a break two back down at Freehold. However, he hasn’t been able to show a whole lot in his recent races. Won here this season, but would need a big step up here.

4   FATHER FRED – Raced well last week against similar on the ship from Freehold and finished third in the end. He’s starting to find some rhythm to this season as he’ll make just his fifth start of 2023 in this spot tonight.

5   CAPTAIN’S REIGN – He’s drawn a lot of tough posts in his time here at the Meadowlands, but he showed solid form last year and has some okay recent lines when he draws well. Perfect post tonight and I’ll take a chance with him here.

6   FINAL JUSTICE – Picked up a check last week against similar here at the Meadowlands and did have some success here last season. Draws well here and will look to build on his mile from last week in start three since that sick scratch.

7   PICTONIAN THUNDER – Picked up a check when last seen here at the Meadowlands against similar and raced well last time out down at Pocono to finish second. Had eight in 2022, but hasn’t quite found that form on the big track.

8   HARRY HANOVER – Couldn’t get a lot going last time out against tougher, but also couldn’t show a lot two back against a similar Amateur field. Has just one win in the last two years and looks to be up against it in this one again.

9   SNOOPY SNOOP – I’ve liked him in several of his recent races here and he’s shown some decent miles in the last few, but there’s also been a few clunkers there, including last time out. Needs to work out a trip tonight from this post.

10 BEACHY BOY HILL – Won five starts ago against similar, but hasn’t been too close in the last several with some tough trips. Has to work from Post 10 tonight, but I’ll use him one more time in this spot to see what trip he works out here.

Race 2:

1   SEVEN SINS – $120,000 Lexington purchase that didn’t see the track as a two-year-old last season. Looked pretty solid in his qualifier last week and I’ll use him underneath tonight in this spot as he makes his first career start for Noel Daley.

2   SAINT LOUIE – Had to work a bit early when last seen in November in his career debut and disappointed as the favorite. Qualified pretty well here a few weeks ago and looks to have a chance in here. One of two for Ake Svanstedt.

3   CANDY BOMBER – Made nine starts last season, but wasn’t able to pick up a win. Did pick up several checks and was taking on some classy Stakes types. Qualifiers were just okay for him recently. I’ll pass and watch this one tonight.

4   POP POP’S TOMMY – Another Lexington purchase that didn’t see the track last year during his two-year-old season. Qualifier last week looked a bit better than the first one. Draws well, but hasn’t shown a lot of gate speed in the Qs.

5   JAQEN H’GHAR – The second entrant in this field for trainer Ake Svanstedt. He had six starts last season and picked up two wins along the way. Raced well when last seen in December here at the Big M. Big chance tonight.

6   HERODOTUS – He had eleven starts last season and picked up two wins during his freshman season. He was facing serious Stakes types when last seen at the Red Mile in October and has qualified very sharply in prep for this start.

7   HOLY BEING – Hasn’t been able to get a whole lot going against similar here at the Meadowlands recently, but he did have four wins last year and has a recency advantage over the rest of this field that is coming off of layoffs.
