The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

TAMPA BAY TODAY – SAT

A tricky card to maneuver this afternoon and grateful to have a Horse to Watch entered. After checking the TAMPA BAY TODAY video on the homepage we think you will agree.

Check out RACE 6, JAN 23 at Tampa Bay Downs with emphasis on Magic Hatter (20-1). He’s the one who was last out nine all the way until the very end when he finally was able to split horses and out-finish the co-favorite as the wire approached, albeit too late.

We thought the ride might have used better judgment, as so might have trainer John Pimental who makes a switch for today’s eighth race starter handicap.

The problem is that we know little of Manny Jiminez’s ability but perhaps I’m not alone and that might keep the ante post odds right where they are now.

The 7YO mare is well spotted at today’s starter level and a repeat of her last gives her a puncher’s chance to pull a huge upset. The concern is the added distance.

We’re taking Magic Hatter across the board at 20-1 or greater and key boxing superfectas with Skol Chant (10-1), Lucy’s Town (7-2), Classy of Course (6-1) and Bella Pierina (12-1).

  1. “Ever so easy Lad” chirped the Caddie on the 11th Green downhill side at Shinnecock. “You play this one ever so easy Lad… thinking like chewing a wad of gum on a gold tooth.”

I found the correct race replay with a you tube search (TAM Race 6 01/23/2021). “Magic Hat”, once in the race, ran beautifully John. Didn’t appear much early pace to close into (4F was a 48.2), so the move was quite impressive. Hopefully in this contest today, Magic will take a “contender’s position” in the race much earlier. Playing a few bucks and going for the brass ring on your 20-1 with some of yesterday’s Tampa FRA winnings thank you. Will use the ten cent SF counsel as well. “Book ’em Dano.”

Your name sake Broadway Joe in his younger days always implied you play for the Win. Cashing Place and Show tickets, at least for we “pitching wedge” types, is kind of like “kissing your sister”, lol. Should be a fun race to watch. Win, Place or Show, or maybe even an “also ran, I thank you in advance for the trip to Tampa. Rainy and chilly in NY this morning.

P.S. Listened to your comments on the Podcast last evening as well, and will also be visiting the FOY live coverage. Have a fun time at GP today my friend. Stay Safe.

  2. It was a nice day at Gulfstream, but not a profitable one, to say the least. The sound you hear is me turning the page…
