The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

HRI STAFF — Unfortunately for the principals involved, Owendale, who will make his next start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, is going to need a new rider after regular partner Florent Geroux was thrown heavily following a morning workout over the weekend.

The 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief has had a productive year, winning four of seven starts including the Ohio and Oklahoma Derbies to go with Keeneland’s G3 Lexington.

Perhaps of greater significance, he was third vs. older in the G1 Pacific Classic.

Owendale worked well over the weekend, trainer Brad Cox told, going a half-mile in :49 over the Churchill Downs main track.

Geroux suffered a broken sternum and it is very doubtful he will be able to return in time to ride in the Breeders’ Cup. Trainer Brad Cox has not yet secured a new rider.
