The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper -– Early Double Analysis — Saturday, June 5, 2021

Race 1

1 OMAHA OMAHA – MIA for a couple weeks sick, so that’s never good. He has shocked us once or twice before, but I’ll take a pass in this tough spot. He might need some class relief too!

2              DOUBLE ACCOUNT – By all rights, he was “supposed” to win that race last week and he did. The confident Tetrick handling always helps. So, like his stablemate, they both begin the hike back UP in class. But, Tetrick did opt off.

3              RESITA – Seems like he’s rounded into better form quite nicely of late. Did some of the dirty work chasing his partner and never stopped coming. For him, that was pretty good effort. Drew right alongside. Can be used again

4              WINGS OF SPEED – Hated to see that miscue last time, because he had been racing so well. But, it was a rainy, crappy night, so everybody should get a pass. Let’s look for a bit of a bounce-back effort here. At a nice price too!

5              TREASURED TEE – Getting a lot closer, as he’s worked his way down in class for the Burke Brigade. They’re pretty good in that category too! They also have three entered in here, as does the Cullipher Crew. Makes things interesting.

6              BOURBON EXPRESS – Flashed some good speed at both ends on the drop to this level last time. Will need a new pilot in here, from a midpack post. No reason to change up the strategy if that speed is working. Tetrick’s choice over 2,3.

7              GRANDMA HEIDI – It’s tough to get a real read on Heidi right now, because she’s been a little inconsistent. Seems to be stuck outside the main players tonight, so that’s a problem for her speed. Could be a long night from way out here.

8              SKYWAY KON MAN – The Kon Man seems up against it at this higher class level. These are too tough for him. Pass.

9              HOCKEY HANOVER – Ended up not firing out last week from this post and you see how that worked out. Might have to take back again, with all the other inside speed. If you fancy, I suggest you get a decent price. Big risk in bad post.

10           SORTIE – Where’s he going from post 10? Probably not very far. Nice win at Pocono, and nice price if you bet.

Race 2

1              PIRATE HANOVER – Put it all together, with a perfect brush and drive by A Mac last week. Dug in gamely to stave off a pretty nice colt too! Meets a few different faces tonight, that have a bit more stakes experience. Won’t be easy repeat.

2              SOUTH BEACH STAR – How can you not love the way this guy is going? Really strong efforts at both Pennsy tracks too! That always helps, to show you can get around anywhere. Back to big track and squeezes in for condition.

3              EXPLOIT – I have to think this is a big test for him tonight. Yes, he has a decent-looking stablemate on the rail, but if he’s going to be a true player on the Med Pace trail, he’s got to step up and win a race like this. Good battle w/#2.

4              GAMBLIN MO – Let’s not leave Mo out of this too! He’s pretty good, and has been rock-solid so far as a 3YO. His try into Abuckabett was better than you think. Plots for good stalking spot here, unless pilot has other plans. Big factor.

5              P L LEEROY – Seems a bit overmatched against these seemingly faster foes. I’ll just take a pass for now.

6              ROGERTHAT BLUECHIP – Been bouncing around from place-to-place, and from class-to-class. Did mange to win one at Philly. But this field looks a lot tougher than some of his usual company. Medium longshot, especially in outer post.

7              I’M NO PANSY – It took a while, but Graham L finally got the Pansy rolling in right direction! Rosecroft is closed for the summer, so he brings the gelding back here. The waters are pretty deep in this field. He’ll need some luck. Trainer: Pansy’s in a very competitive field. With an outside post against top Meadowlands horses, all I can hope for is a check. He will be competitive against these, but hoping for an inside post next time.

8              SWEET TRUTH – Just not in a good spot against a vicious field. I would have a tough time building a strong case.
