The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — First Race Review, Friday July 24

1 CHEYENNE RYAN LEE – He’s had a couple of starts to show us something and just hasn’t done it yet. Pass.
2 JOHNNY CHIP – Grinded it out when well bet in the debut for the new barn and didn’t quit that badly. Simply put, he
paced fast enough to win one of these and Jimmy Foley will take a turn in the sulky seat tonight. They can win.
3 HONOR ME – Launched a pretty big-looking move for the Judge a few weeks ago and then flattened out. Was actually
much better in the race before that. He’s a one-move kind of horse and this is perfect post to stalk the pace. Danger.
4 LADY MAYA – Really don’t know what to do with her here. Looks like Adam R bought her. It’s been three weeks since
she raced. Not exactly a winning machine before the purchase. I guess I just want to watch one first. Puts up Joe Lee.
5 RACE ME ROCKY – Finally gets a decent break from the post gods. That alone has to help, right? Bob D has won a
couple of these races over the years. Got “stretched out” in a fast race up at Vernon. Maybe a live longshot?
6 MEADOWBROOK TIGER – Just 1-17 over past two seasons, so that’s a concern. I see the connections involved here, so
I always take extra look. This gelding was facing some better foes. Wakeup call not impossible in spot like this.
7 WILLIE BOOTS – If you can figure Willie out right now, I will just congratulate you. After the disastrous effort, he came
back with a sparkler for John C at almost 50-1. Which Willie shows up tonight? No idea. Good luck with that.
8 STEUBEN MAGIC RIDE – I will keep him on the longshot list for now. Drew outer post now. That won’t help.
9 SCIROCCO MISTYSAID – Don’t know why he went to running there for a bit, but I will give credit for the comeback. I
think we all know he can win the race, but has to overcome another tough post. No mistakes allowed, Mark!
10 MAY I CRUISE WEST – Suddenly finds himself stuck out in post 10 and that seals his fate for tonight.

Second Race Review:

1 ONE TOUGH NUT – Gets the very tepid call as morning line favorite in this very hard-to-handicap race. He took some
action last time in third back off the layoff and raced well, but not great. IF he takes one more forward step, he can win.
2 ATOMIC REI – I really don’t know what to tell you here. We all know that IF he can find some of those miles from the
past, he can wake up and win this. BUT, if there’s no price, I’m not buying. I need to see more from him first.
3 SOMESURFSOMEWHERE – Still on the big longshot list, having shown very little here lately. Pass.
4 RAPID IT UP ART – Shows two completely opposite efforts off the bench. The speed the first time. The mild rally last
time. Draws same decent post. Will have to find more, but in a race like this, anything is possible.
5 JUSTA CAMILION – Can’t really come up with a reason to expect any success in this corner yet. Not likely.
6 SOMETHINGINTHEWIND – Almost by default, he looks better than some of these. Moves out to a tougher starting
slot, but like I said, this is tough race to find a winner. Would love to see a bit more speed? Maybe. MM chose #1.
7 JOHNNY MARSHALL – Scratched out of the Pocono start. Says ineligible. Didn’t know that one could be ineligible for
a claimer? Was facing bottom level up at Vernon, and with little success. Tough to make a strong case.
8 NORTHERN JACK – The Mann’s had a few starts to tinker around with Jack. I’m just going to take a shot that tonight’s
the night! He had one ready recently, only to suffer a disqualification. This is a questionable bunch, so take a shot.
9 SMOKIN N TRIPIN – Even Yannick couldn’t “motivate” this gelding in the comebacker. Will need a lot more than that,
and those kind of calls are hard to predict.
10 BLACK HAMMER – After enticing us with a really good effort, the Hammer regressed a bit last time. Now, he gets
slammed with post 10. That’s not good for him. I just don’t see him winning this. For a piece only.
