THE ANGRY BIRDS

By Marc Lawrence – The cardinal bird is also known for representing celebration, rejuvenation, hope, health, and joy. After the offseason this year, the hope is back for the Cardinals in the NFL. The versatility of Arizona’s first round draft pick LB Isaiah Simmons (No. 8 overall) has been well documented, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less impressive. He played 100 or more snaps in 2019 at linebacker, strong safety, free safety, slot cornerback and edge defender. He will probably end up playing primarily at linebacker in the NFL and figures to become one of the top coverage players and athletes at the position. The question is where will he play? “Simmons’ ability to blur the linebacker/safety positional designation is going to be a defensive coordinator’s best friend at the next level,” said Pro Football Focus … OT Josh Jones of Houston was Arizona’s second selection the draft. He was also PFF’s fourth-ranked tackle and 14th overall ranked prospect. On the heels of the passing of former Auburn head coach Pat Dye, it was announced that former Tennessee great Johnny Majors died Wednesday at 85. Majors “spent his last hours doing something he dearly loved: looking out over his cherished Tennessee River,” said his wife, Mary. He was a player at the University of Tennessee where he was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1956. He went back to his alma mater to coach Tennessee from 1977-1992. There he won seven bowl games and three SEC championships, and was voted coach of the year multiple times. Afterward, Majors then “orchestrated one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football history” after taking Pittsburgh from a 1-10 season before he arrived to a national championship four years later. He then went on to coaching 185 wins over his career. Yet another legendary coach has passed. RIP Johnny.

The good news is ASU is 15-2-1 ATS as a conference home dog of more than 5 points.
