By Marc Lawrence – All seven selections in the 2020 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers were on the defensive side of the ball. That should speak volumes as first-year head coach Matt Rhule takes the reins from Ron Rivera. According to Pro Football Focus, first round selection DL Derrick Brown from Auburn has thundering size and superb athleticism … Meanwhile, edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos of Penn State has an awkwardness in the way he rushes the passer that is hard to ignore, and was the steal of their draft … Southern Illinois safety Jeremy Chinn has peak athletic tools for the safety position, but he’s far more an athlete than a football player at this point … For more on the Panthers’ draft and a composite review of their grade from 4 of the nation’s leading football authorities, click here.
If any one player in the NBA was the very best at setting up a pick-and-roll it was Wes Unseld. He was indeed the ‘bone breaker’. Unseld was a 6-foot-7 bull of a center who seemed to be chiseled out of a block of granite. He was the league’s MVP and Rookie of the Year in 1968-69 and a five-time NBA All-Star who captained the Baltimore and Washington Bullets to four NBA Finals appearances in the 1970s and to a championship in 1977-78. “No one will take Wes’ place,” former NBA star center Rick Mahorn said after taking over for Unseld after he retired from the Bullets. “I’ll go out and try to play my game and if I do half as good as he did I’ll be fine.” RIP Wes. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your career.
