The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Just got home after dealing with a health issue this am. Sorry about late posting.

In today’s fifth, an optional allowances for older horse going a mile on the Tampa Turf, Mongolian Apple is difficult to ignore as he’s racing in the best form of his career.

Last out, off his prior in his first start at Tampa this season, he showed huge improvement off his prior when dropped into a restricted claimer.

He comes back in here against much tougher off a 54 day layp and obviously David Van Winkle makes an assessment that he’s doing very well and can handle the rise.

Van Winkle is 16% effective off this type of spacing, and stable stable partner Chad Lindsey and is 13% riding for this barn after 688 rides, While low profile, Lindsey is a very solid 13% efficient on turf.

The clincher is that his last race matched his lifetime top and as a newly turned 4-year-old is poised to continue marching forward.

Taking Mongolian Apple to win at 502 or greater, boxing an exacta with with Coronova with Kevin Gomez, a profitable 20% riding for this barn in his career.

  1. Nice call John, I was afraid they would pound him down, but I hoped for 5/2 or so. Still, a win is a win and the exacta payoff was better than I expected. Thanks for your wonder articles and race thoughts. Richard
