The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL,  May 27, 2022   —  Interesting mix of races comprise Saturday’s Cross-Country Pick 5, featuring two events from Belmont Park and three from Churchill Downs.

Of course, bettors are not locked into this or any other sequence. View the races individually for early line win-value straight plays, or every manner of exotics—vertical, horizontal, it matters not.

As Jack Vincennes might say: “Whatever you desire…”

The Skinny:  Highly Motivated (5-2) will benefit from season’s debut. Raced between rivals 3-4 wide, angled 7-wide entering straight and finished well through stretch… Uncoupled Chad Stage Raider (7-2) also was surrounded throughout, finishing with interest when clear; broke maiden here… The Reds (6-1) was slow to get rolling, saved ground throughout, changed leads late and was going well at the finish. Too Boss (5-1) had a good trip and a laudable second in fast, Big A two-turner. Both wins around one turn.

Ticket Toppers: Highly Motivated, Stage Raider

Early-Line Win Value: Stage Raider to win at 3-1 or greater

Exotica: Three-horse exacta box, ticket toppers with The Reds. Trifecta and/or Superfecta keys both ticket toppers first with The Reds, Too Boss and Captain Bombastic third or fourth.

  1. I needed Derrynane to win last time out as my single in the late pick 5-4-3 and double. Joel rode her way too confidently. I don’t think he will do that today especially knowing Haughty will be closing late.

    1. Derrynane was terrible but we were saved when the price became unbetable following the scratch of Haughty. Unfortunately, used her with Ward filly that was bet off the board and was never in a position to root. It happens, tough game.

Speaking of which, needed the longer Chad beaten a nose by odds-on Chad. Grrrr!

  2. Hope you’re right… just prefer the recency over class this time… but using both horizontally
