By HRI Staff — Beginning June 7 through July 3, the balance of the Churchill Downs sprint-summer meet has be suspended. The remaining dates will be run at Ellis Park as investigations into the causes of 12 equine fatalities from March 30 through Friday continue.
The switch was made on the recommendation of the Horseracing Safety and Integrity Authority, which is conducting its investigations alongside the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission as to the cause of the equine fatalities.
Thus far, examination of the racetrack by racing-surface experts have indicated there are no issues with the surface.
Both organizations are in agreement that more time is needed to complete an exhaustive study of all factors so that further measures can be taken to have surface, safety, and integrity protocols strengthened.
