The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Race 1 Review– Friday, July 17, 2020

1 BROADWAY BRUISER – One of the many dropdown possibilities in a pretty wide-open race. I don’t think he’ll be 40-1 like that spot two back, especially with the pole and first-time Lasix. Have to give a legitimate shot again. Speed!

2 MASSTER BLUE – I’ll keep this guy on the longshot list for now. That really wasn’t a bad effort last time to hit the

board at 50-1. But, he’s probably facing a tougher group here. Will need to step it up even more.

3 BIZET – The outer post, and overland trip may have compromised him two weeks ago. The effort wasn’t bad, but it

wasn’t great either. Tonight, Tim opted off, so that’s a concern. For this level, this field looks pretty tough. Your call?

4 STARLIGHT AS – Didn’t really fire his best shot in the first start back here. Yes, he drops a tick, but I think I’d need to

see a little more before I could endorse. Hasn’t won a race here yet. Maybe not a big track horse? We’ll find out.

5 CHIPLOSIVE – Barn is absolutely on fire right now and they lure Tetrick off #3 tonight. That made sense. Technically,

his race back here in June should be good enough. If he can trot that fast against these, he will be tough to beat.

6 EXPLOSIVE – Appears to be on the slow and steady path back to top form. That last one was a little better, but I’m not

sure he’s ready to fire that winning shot. Would need just the right kind of trip and burst to upset these.

7 ONE DIRECTION – Bob L started this fella back over at Pocono and those races look good. Horse’s only win this year

came here, so take that into consideration. I’m not really in love with another outside post, but Yannick will put in play.

8 TOTAL DIVA – I don’t think she’s a match for these, especially from an outside post like this. I will pass tonight.

9 WHAT CHAPTER – Everybody hopped on board here last week and they got burned with the miscue. Really suffering a

case of the “bad post blues” right now. Dave will have to be extra careful with him at the start. I can’t bet off that.

10 CHIEF JUSTICE – Another that took a ton of early betting action last time and he never really got into the race. Draws

same terrible post, second-time Lasix, but I see the same thing coming. Good luck if you fancy.

Race 2 Review

1 MUSCLE MEX – One of MANY horses that did not handle the off track in their nighttime debuts. Oh well! Back to the

drawing board, and unfortunately, the forecast looks wet again. Have to give another chance. Looked good at farm.

2 SPY BOOTH – Last week’s favorite didn’t even make it to the gate. But, everybody gets a “free pass” due to the sloppy

conditions. This fella was just too good in both baby races. Definitely hoping he bounces back with no breaks. Trainer:

Made a baby break last week and recovered well.

3 CAMDEN HILLS – He stayed trotting last week, but didn’t trot fast enough at the end to stay close. I just feel he will

need a little more seasoning before he comes to his true speed. Eventually, it will come. So far, not bad!

4 HEARTBREAK HLL – This one’s gotten a little bit faster each time for the top stable. So, let’s expect that trend to

continue. I like that he hasn’t made any mistakes yet. That’s a good thing! Draws better post, but loses Tetrick.

5 MAJESTIC DEO – After a very slow prep here, barn opted to scoot over to Pocono for a try. Went a little better there,

but I always do worry when a colt misses the first leg of a stakes. I guess he’s just not ready for this quite yet.

6 CALLE PALEMA – Has done everything right so far. Seemed like Yannick got along with him nicely last week and the

colt trotted home willingly. Like most from this barn, he should get better with experience. Moves out a few slots.

7 MAGICAL MUSCLE MAN – Tough call here! Especially if the price is low again. Seemed poised to make a big move

and then ran in the slop. I’m not in love with the post switch, but Tetrick chose this one over stablemate. No mistakes!

8 ZENITH STRIDE – One of several in here that burned some betting case with his early miscue. Seemed very “live” that

night, so let’s expect him to be “live” again. Post gods were not kind, though. Sears will have to be careful tonight.
