The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — March 13, 2021

Race 1

1              ROLLIN IN NEW YORK – Tries to make the transition from that difficult non-winners of two class, to this medium non-winners of 4,500. Really don’t know what to expect in wide-open race like this. Dull effort last. Loses Yannick too!

2              TAIL HOOK – Not much going on in this corner, so let’s keep him on the longshot list after fair qualifier. Pass.

3              PREMIER ROCKSTAR – Barn’s got two in here. One hiking. One dropping. You know how that usually goes. That was a very nice brush and crush, confident win last week. Simon did take the other one, so that’s all we need to know.

4              STARZNHEAVEN – I had a feeling he was going to get overbet last week, but 4-5! Really? He turned in good, but not great effort. It’s a lot harder for him on the mile track now at age nine. Forced back UP the ladder here. It’s not easy.

5              PASSA-GRILLE BEACH – The barn’s been making a good living on dropdowns like this over the past month. They’ve earned it too! We’ve seen Passa pounce on fields like this before. I’d love to go against, but can’t. He looks best.

6              THNDRFROMTHETHRON N – Might be your best option, if you want to try and beat #5. He’s also beaten fields like this already. Gets third straight drop and keeps Dexter in the seat. Those are all positives. Wouldn’t talk you off.

7              ALBERGO HANOVER – Yes, they are teaching this guy to finish, not blast. And, it’s working! But, this outside post, outside the two faves probably won’t help. Unless you’re planning on a mayhem pace. That would set it up for him.

8              LOVE THE BLUES N – This barn’s got a pair in too! And I prefer the other one from the better post. Wait for spot.

9              LEAR SEELSTER – Tetrick was listed on the sheet, so that’s sign of positive intent. Even though he’s qualified a few on Saturday’s, he hasn’t driven the card. I don’t like this post. I do see the drop, though. Mixed feelings. Your call?

10           TOPVILLE OLYMPIAN – Where’s he going from post 10, with no early speed? You already know the answer.

Race 2

1              CRUZING HILL – Benefited from a picture-perfect drive by Joe B last week. Full credit for that. And credit to the gelding for paying off for his new barn. Does NOT have to step up here, and fits series well. He is a factor!

2              ROCKIN PANDA – Overall, going pretty well right now. It’s difficult for lower claimers to stay consistent, but the Panda has. Barn’s done good work here with it’s claims, and they took this one for spot like this. We’re going to see speed.

3              SUGARTOWN – Ended last Saturday’s card with a great brush and crush! The Risi’s were cheering loudly! Good steer by the Captain and now Sugar goes out for new barn. Not sure who will be favored, but it could be him off that mile.

4              AIRSPINDER – Aiming a little high here, and has simply missed too much time for my taste. I will pass for now.

5              POP ICON – Invades from Pocono where the bad post blues were in full effect! He has shown speed before, so it will be up to Joe what he wants to do. Plenty of other speed-types in here. Could be a very good sneaky price play.

6              REGGIANO – Burned a bit of betting money when he was sent off at ridiculous 3-5 last week. Dex gave him every chance, but that trip was too tough. Moves out a few slots now, hoping to repeat that February performance. Maybe.

7              PAR INTENDED – Also in from Pocono, but his form is flat. I will keep him on the longshot list for now.

8              INDEPENDENT ONE – I kept waiting and waiting for some sign of life out of him, and I guess he finally showed it. Outfinished a bunch of tired ones for second behind Sugar. Can he go forward off that? This is tough post and field.

9              JUST WAVE GOODBYE – Really had no excuses last week. Sat the pylons, had room and was clearly outkicked home. Now moves from pole to post nine and you know how I feel about that. That’s not going to work.
