The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper —   Early Double Analysis — Friday, June 4, 2021 —

Race 1

1 MAYFIELD DUKE – Gets the extremely slim call as morning line favorite, in a very hard-to-handicap race. Since the win for $7,500, he’s found the water a tad too deep. This looks like a good spot to bounce back in. Must sit closer.

2              STEUBEN GLADIATOR – Out of same race as many of these and he just wasn’t any good. Will need lot more tonight.

3              BIG SWEEP OSBORNE – Finds his way over to the GSY series and it has to be considered a class drop. That should give him a big chance to get a lot closer. The post relief will be big help too! I certainly wouldn’t talk you off.

4              CASHNCAM – Hit the board there in three straight, so that’s a lot more than some of these can say. The inner post should keep him close to the action again. His move isn’t huge, so timing and trip will be critical again.

5              JERRYTONE – JC got to set his own pace up front last week, but gelding didn’t really fight much when the test came. With that said, look for a different kind of trip here, and maybe one move? That could work a lot better. Finds stamina.

6              ALLGONOWHOA – Sometimes, in a race like this, a fresh face is the way to go! Maybe this guy, off the purchase out of the Meadows? First time Team Bongiorno, and first time Kleinhans hands could be nice combo! Consider at price.

7              AMERICAN NITRO – That certainly was an “adventurous” first trip around the track. Won’t hold it against the horse. But, he will need to find a lot more speed to get any closer. That’s a big question mark, especially from this post.

8              ONE LUCKY DRAGON – 12YO veteran finds his way up the NJ Turnpike for a big track try. And, that’s the question! We know he tries hard, but will he go fast enough on the mile? I don’t have the answer to that one yet. I’ll watch one.

9              KEEP AMERICA GREAT – Moves from pole to post nine. Not good. I glance over at his record last two years and see no wins. Not good. Why should he snap that skid in here? I’ll go with no.

Race 2

1              FINAL JUSTICE – Just one lonely win in each of the last two seasons. That never attracts my attention. With that said, even from the rail, let’s make him a medium longshot. There are no killers in here, so it’s wide open. Must step it up.

2              BEBOP ON THE BLOCK – I have NO idea what’s up with the Bop right now, but it isn’t good! He has completely tailed off, and now shows a sick scratch too! So, I couldn’t possibly come up with a reason to bet on him. Even vs. these.

3              WESTERN REDHOT – Red will end up being the favorite, almost by default, but I suggest extreme caution. He’s not the most consistent performer, and he goes out for another new barn. His best would be good enough. Do we get best?

4              DAVIDS COMING HOME – With Freehold now closed for the summer, we hope to see more of Luke Hanners here. Especially as stakes season begins, and drivers go out of town. This would be nice spot to wake one up. Horse needs it.

5              IDEAL SON – He’s very similar to #3. Not consistent. And right now, just plain bad. Yes, I see this as a monster class drop, so he’s “supposed” to wake up here. But, total turnaround and wakeup calls are very hard to predict. Good luck.

6              DEERFIELD BEACH – No, he’s not one of my favorites either, but in a race like this, he looks a LOT better than most. Danny D got him to show speed down at Freehold and Toddy can do the same here. Might as well take a shot.

7              COACH CAL – Was in-to-go at Monti on Wednesday, which is after deadline for this program. So, I don’t know what happened. I will gauge strictly on his past here, which isn’t very good.

DRIVER CHOICES: Todd McCarthy 6 over 7
