The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — March 19, 2021

Race 1

1              JOHNNY FLY SWATTER – Finds his way UP the NJ Turnpike for a big track try, for barn that’s had some success here. Yes, Johnny will have to go a little faster here, but maybe he can? Took mark at Vernon. Snapped long skid in last. Trainer: He’s coming around for us, but 5-118 lifetime! Yikes! I think he’ll like the big track.

2              VAN DIESEL – Unfamiliar connections here, but I also see the 1-30 slate over past two seasons. That’s not enough.

3              IDEAL TYSON A – That last line down at Freehold doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, but Joe Lee does hop in the bike. That’s always a plus! So is the inside post. I’d like to watch one here first, just to see if horse improves a little. Trainer: Tries the Big M again. Draws a good spot. And hopefully, Joe Lee gets along with him.

4              JAMAICAN COWBOY – 11YO’s just bee off a little too long. That, plus a very slow qualifier, make him a pass for now.

5              MAY I CRUISE WEST – Retains his usual longshot status, as he failed to extend his check-getting streak. Will try to establish a new one here and has a perfect post for his kind of style. Let’s see if Mark can get him into the race.

6              FINAL JUSTICE – Goes in for the claiming tag here, and he did prevail in that rather weak race last week. Benefited from a perfect Yannick drive that night too! So, the pressure’s on Juan C to work out similar trip. That’s never easy.

7              TASTE OF HISTORY – Just went a little too fast on the lead and got tired near the end. But, I must add that speed horses were doing VERY well last Friday. Keep that in mind during the night. The Judge will have to slow him down bit.

8              NA NA NA BAATMAN – Really tough call here. Did not show much in first start for new barn off claim. But, as I just said, it was difficult to make up ground last Friday. Can give him a pass for that. Better find more speed tonight.

9              ROCKINWITHTHEBEST – Jimmy F put this guy in the absolute perfect spot last week. Just very unlucky to get collared by Preppy. With Preppy now out of this race, Rockin gets the tough post. He might be able to overcome it again. Trainer: Has been racing great recently. Draws the outside, but Jimmy can sit up close with him like last week.

Race 2

1              ROLLIN IN NEW YORK – Hasn’t made much of an impression here yet. Had this post last week and did not take advantage. Yes, that was a tougher field, but Rollin will have to pick up his game to threaten. A big maybe.

2              WESTERN REDHOT – He’s been pretty inconsistent of late, which is never good. Came rallying behind Preppy last time, in a race that did set up for the closers. I’m not sure of pace scenario in here, but he should be close enough.

3              CANDELL – Was flat when he raced here. Looks like he got run over down at Freehold. So, my opinion is that he’s just not sharp right now. Demand fair value, IF you think he can turn things around. Will probably try to rally again.

4              GOTTA GO B B – Since that win, things clearly haven’t gone his way lately. I like his chances of getting a trip in this smaller field. Midpack post gives pilot some options. If the price is right, I’d toss him onto the ticket tonight.

5              PAR INTENDED – Looks like a purchase here for Team Beyer. Horse had been tailing off a touch, so they’ve got their work cut out for them. Did flash speed a while back. This would be great spot for that, IF primed and ready. Trainer: I scooped him up off OnGait this past weekend. He’s a nice old horse that I know from back home. I was very pleased to win the auction on him. He’s a very happy horse and he trained well Wednesday morning! Hoping he brings same energy on Friday. We’re letting his hopples out a couple inches too!

6              WATCHMENEIGHNEIGH – Neigh Neigh is very much the one to beat in here, especially with Scotty Z on board. For the most part, his form looks a LOT better than these. He’s got one big turn of speed, and it can be used anywhere.

7              OCEAN COLONY – It’s awfully hard for me to believe he’s in this sluggish form right now. Not too long ago, he’d be barred from wagering against a field like this. What’s happened? I don’t know that. Just praying he bounces back now.
