The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper Early Double Analysis Saturday, January 29, 2022

Race 1

1 NOWHERE CREEK A – They put two qualifiers into this down under import and that second one showed some promise. These aren’t easy spots to debut in, but he does have the rail and does like to win. Very interesting. two qualifiers into this down under import and that second one showed some promise.

2   QUICK SHOT – Pretty solid and gutsy win against weaker last week. But, now forced up the class ladder with a double jump. That doesn’t work too often, so he will have to prove me wrong. At least he gets good post to sit and stalk.

3   FATHER NUNO – It’s getting to be now or never time for this guy. He’s faced, and beaten far better than this in the past. Probably just needs a confidence builder, and this should be it. No excuses from good post, as Zeron’s choice.

4   SMOKIN BY N – Matched his 2021 win total in second go of this season. Dropped and popped successfully. Paid a decent price too! So, he steps back up now after a week off. Will need even more, but sharp horses are dangerous.

5   CYCYLONE BANNER N – Gets a little post relief tonight and probably needs it. Looks like a good one-move closer, so he will need the right kind of trip. This race could have a lively pace to it. That would aid his cause. A maybe.

6   GOOD ROCKIN – Loved the way he finished that first start back. Was the perfect race to get him ready for a top effort. I just wish he could have dropped in class too! Jake will drive him the same way here and pick off the tired ones.

7   STONEDUST – The Dust was out and rolling in a good flow last week. He’s been okay late, but not great. I’m guessing he might need a class drop as well, to wake back up. Eventually it will come, but we just have to be patient.

8   WALKNAFTER MIDNITE – Gave it a very good, aggressive try when dropped to this level last time. That did come from the rail, though, and this is post eight. Will have to be going forward a little more early from way out here.

9   THE BOOK OF LIFE – Scotty Z has been sticking with all the Daley-trained horses, so it did surprise me that he chose Father over the Book. I think he made right choice. This guy scratched Tuesday at YR to await this spot. Tuf call.

Race 2

1   MICKEYS SPIRIT – One of eight class droppers in this race, so good luck with that! The post relief alone is going to give Mickey a much better chance. He’s a speed horse, but can save a little something for late. No reason not to like.

2   WHAT THE LUCK – It’s been a while since he won a race. I’m not even sure we can call this a true class drop? Pass.

3   HAPPY TRIO – There is very little in his recent form to suggest a total turnaround. Yes, they happen sometimes, but they are almost impossible to predict. I’ll just pass and watch another one, to see if he improves at all.

4   BULLVILLE TERROR – Really had no chance from those outside posts, so let’s not be too hard on him. This is a LOT more like it. I have tried him a few times, against better fields, so why not try again? Pilot will have him in good spot.

5   IAMMRBRIGHTSIDE N – Gets the tepid call as fave, simply because the barn has been rolling pretty good. They’re not afraid to drop one. 12YO veteran packs good speed to grab position. Just needs to add a touch of stamina.

6   THNDRFROMTHETHRON N – I was not happy with his start two back. Kind of got shuffled with no big moves last time. He needs the class relief too, and a big wakeup call. Not sure he’s good enough right now.

7   CENTURY FURY – One of four that Yannick was listed on, so you see who he chose. This gelding hasn’t made much of an impact here yet, but he continues down the class ladder. Seems overdue for some sort of wakeup. Maybe tonight?

8   JACKAMINO – I’ve never been a real big fan of this horse either. Tough post. Another drop. Not for me just yet.

9   SADIQ HANOVER – That’s a bit of a puzzling kind of race he offered up down at Freehold. May have to ask Edison about that one? He’s never been a real snap leaver, so this post will test him out. Will have to grind into it.

10 NIHILATED TRUTH – Looks like the longshot of the bunch, stuck way outside. Would have to get very lucky.
