The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — Friday, August 6, 2021 —

Race 1

1        PERMANENT JOY – Getting a little “long in the teeth” at age 13, and I do wonder if he can still trot fast enough to compete on the mile track. But, those last two look like better efforts. Rounding into form? Maybe.

2              BIG MONEY HONEY – Hasn’t won yet this season, but has been knocking on the door with some consistent efforts. That’s not bad! The inner post is a plus, so he can sit close. Will try to trip-out and pounce with a late move.

3              CASH FOR GOLD – Been bouncing around Pennsylvania lately, with just moderate success. His one and only win this year did come here. He’s not totally out of this one, being a wide-open race. Wouldn’t shock me.

4              DRAIN THE SWAMP – Owns only one lifetime win and it didn’t’ come here. I doubt we’ll see the second tonight.

5              INUKCHUK CHUCK – He’s also the veteran of many Big M wars. And he’s done some good at times too! That last speed try at Yonkers should have him ready for this. Don’t be shocked if he goes a very long way for Mark S.

6              EXPLOSIVE LEGGS – Dropped and popped in a nice spot last time at the Meadows. I am unfamiliar with owner/driver Sikaras, so let’s see if he can put the same kind of steer Aaron M did on the gelding. If they make top, watch out.

7              BIG NUDGE – I guess we should consider Nudge the fave tonight, despite his 1-10 record so far. Tony V has been pretty hot in the club events just about everywhere this year. I’m not in love with the post, but he will be coming late.

8              IF I MUST – Another 0-for this year. Not an easy race to handicap. The post won’t help. Will need a lot of luck.

Race 2

1              MISSY TRIX – Looks like they finally have her going in the right direction. It’s been a good roll the past few weeks for this barn. Returns from Philly and back in against tougher. Will have to step up her game even more to win.

2              LOOKIN CHIC – Little bit of a late start to the season, but this barn never rushes them. They’re ready when they’re ready! She hasn’t done anything wrong yet, and her speed was better last time. Finished up okay too! Ready now!

3              MAGIC CAN HAPPEN – They aimed pretty high with her right off the bat. The effort two back is good enough to win this. The post ruined her chances in the final. This is ideal spot to grab that first win. Can’t leave out.

4              PRETTY INTERESTING – Her name sums up her chances tonight. Couple good efforts. Couple just fair efforts. So, I don’t really know what’s coming tonight, but I do know she’s in good hands, and would not be a shocker.

5              SABRINA HILL – This is a big week for the Beaver barn, after that sparkling upset in the Oaks elim. He’s a very good horseman and deserves a nice shot like that. This filly’s been okay so far. I like no mistakes. Has speed. Sends again.

6              YANABA – Unfortunately, she has not improved along the way. She’s a big longshot now, stuck outside post.

7              GRACELYN HANOVER – By all rights, she IS supposed to wire this bunch. But, I will admit, she gets a tad leg-weary at the very end. It’s cost her before, but against some very strong fields. She is technically faster, but must dig in.
