The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — Friday, May 20, 2022

Race 1

1              MR CARROTTS – Not much to recommend here. They keep entering and racing him with no results. Pass again.

2              MILLIONDOLLARDAD – Gets a little better post here. Maybe that will help. Dave Y knows the horse, after steering him once for Dakota J. It’s basically another impossible GSY race, so good luck with whomever you play. You’ll need it. Trainer: Was super last week, even finishing 6th. The fastest he has been in three years. The driver change help, and so did taking out the pop-out earplugs. Benched myself again this weekend. If he shows up like last week, watch out.

3              FINAL JUSTICE – Not a whole lot going on in this corner either. Nothing short of a total form reversal would win.

4              BILBO HANOVER – Sometimes, in races like this, you just look for a fresh face to try. I know he hasn’t won yet this year, but he does look somewhat consistent. That makes him look better than some of these. Dave G on. Driver: First time Glasser! Not sure if that’s good or bad. We’ll see.

5              SETTLEMOIR – Woke up his form a bit down at the Hold, but it does make me wonder just how weak that field was. If Austin Siegelman couldn’t get him home at even money on the lead, then I want no part of him back here. Pass.

6              KNOW YOUR ROLL – First crack at the GSY, so maybe he’s a fit? Maybe. He’s got hot driver in the series. He does seem like a one-way closer, so the pace and trip will have to be right. I’d rather take my chances with him at a price.

7              S MCKEE – These outer post just don’t help him. Took back and never really had a chance last time. If he does that again, how much chance will he have tonight? And, what will the price be? In this field, he’s likely to take some money.

8              MASTER CONRAD – Most handicappers will look at that last line and overemphasize it. He was okay, but it’s been the same story for a long time. He just leaves himself with too much to do. I’m making him tepid fave. That’s no good.

9              HAYMITCH – After hinting that he was ready to return to better form, Mitch regressed a little in those last two. It’s been a while since he left the gate, but THIS is the perfect spot for it. Have to overcome this post somehow.

10           STATESMAN N – Had he drawn better, I could make a much stronger case for success. But, post 10? I don’t know what Yogi will have planned, but it better have some magic in it. Good luck!

Race 2

1              BETTER TAKE IT – Ended up favored last time and ended up doing too much of the dirty work. But, he did not pack it in. He’s been stuck in two straight very fast miles. It’s hard to keep up in all of them. Pole draw again. Must sit closer.

2              MONTEFALCO N – Todd took a shot and sent him last week, but he lacked the punch to get close late. Could step right around #1 and maybe sit a better trip after that? That’s a maybe.

3              GODS SPIRIT N – Yes, he last raced on April 9, so he can’t possibly be primed and ready for this. I will wait.

4              SPOILERONTHEBEACH – Bouncing around on the smaller tracks lately, but with just limited success. He drops. He has won here before. I guess I could make a small case for a wakeup call. A small case.

5              IMAGINARY LINE – Team Bongiorno is especially dangerous on drops like this. For a short field, it’s a pretty wide-open race. The midpack post gives Joe options. No reason not to hop on board here. I wouldn’t talk you off.

6              SEEUINNASHVILLE A – Dominated that GSY group from this post two back. Is this tougher? Probably. Just toss the last one from post nine, as he never got involved. Look for a much more aggressive try in this spot. Another big chance.

7              DECISION DAY – That was a tough beat for all of us that backed him last time. But, he still raced great and just got a little “unlucky.” So, he’s back in good form and may also be aggressive. The switch to outer post never helps.
