The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper – Early Double Analysis – Saturday, August 7, 2021

Race 1

1              LITERL LAD HANOVER – Dave M chose here over #2, despite horse’s poor effort in the Adios elim. Leads me to believe the Burke Brigade told him horse would be okay. This is solid drop in class. Needs a confidence builder.

2              ALWAYS B SWEET – Last three efforts were strong, so I’m a little surprised that Miller opted off. He does a lot of driving for these guys, but also for Burke too! For tonight’s wagering purposes, I’ll probably side with this fella.

3              STRAIGHT TALK – The Brigade have three in here, so that makes it harder on the handicappers. Yannick chose this one over #9, which did not surprise me. Horse had a little too much ground to make up last time. Should be closer.

4              EMBLAZE HANOVER – They threw him in the Adios too, and that didn’t work out. No match here before that. Pass.

5              BETTER TAKE IT – Yes, he got a little overbet last time, but Tim sure gave him every chance. Just curled up at the end, so let’s not expect to see him on the lead today. A different trip could produce a better result. Don’t be shocked.

6              HIGHLANDBEACHSBEST – I thought he raced a lot better, with the added Lasix last time. Barely photoed for second at the wire. Scott Z sticks and I think we’ll see some speed again. I would not leave off the ticket.

7              PIRATE HANOVER – Some things just beguile me at times. Like how he paid $19.60 last week. Oh well. Alagna Armada student is getting better every time. You better not leave him off the ticket either. Razor sharp right now.

8              TRUFFLE DOG – Was in a nice spot here last week and couldn’t get it done. Now moves outside, and loses Scotty Z.

9              SOMEWHEREINVERONA – I really don’t know what’s up with this horse right now. But, I know I’m passing here.

10           SOUTH BEACH STAR – Oh what to do in the Hambo Day opener from post 10? No doubt he loves this track. No doubt he’s got good, reliable speed. And, he has overcome tough posts before. The one to beat, but no cinch today.

Race 2

1              OFF THE RECORD – That was a pretty good effort behind the two killers last week. It’s nice when you hit the board at 57-1! Yes, she faces Fire Start again, but the pole is perfect here and Corey will protect as best he can. Second again?

2              STAYCATION HANOVER – Yes, she threw in a little bit of a clunker last week, but you can’t always let one bad start bother you. She was way too sharp prior to that. Will also appreciate the inner post, and be in ideal stalking spot.

3              GRACE HILL – A Mac chose here over #3. Just toss her last, due to the bad post. Her race in the Mistletoe was good, and her race in Indiana was good. So, I fully expect her to be good here! Will she offer some betting value? Maybe.

4              FIRE START HANOVER – Couldn’t possibly have been any more impressive last week! That was some throwdown between those two and at least for one week, we found out who was better. This looks like a walk in the park for her.

5              MIKALA – No, I don’t know what happened at the Meadows last time, but it just wasn’t a good start for her. Her prior Meadows effort was strong. Maybe she just had a bad day? I don’t think she can beat #4, but underneath in gimmick?

6              DOUBLEOFFTHEWALL – Definitely looking like one of the longshots in here. Especially from the outer post. Pass.

7              THEBEACHISCALLING – This is very interesting spot for her. Gunned out with speed last time, but then came up a touch flat late. Talk about the bad post blues! She’s overdue for some sort of good break. Can’t guarantee that here.
