The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — Friday, May 13, 2022

Race 1

1              FERNADO – Gets the very tepid call as morning line favorite, in another absolutely impossible race to handicap. So, with that said, I know he’s 0-10 so far this year, but his last race looks better than most of these. Has the rail too!

2              KINGOFTHEJUNGLE – Could he step up and win this? Maybe. But, his last start was downright poor. So, it would take a total bounce back to get it done. Maybe he can sit in, save ground and try to get lucky late. Maybe.

3              ROCKINWITHTHEBEST – I think you can see his overall win record over the past two seasons, but you can also see who’s driving tonight. The Tony V factor! I’m not betting on him, but maybe you well. Good post. Has won here before.

4              MINTILLISCIOUS – Fresh face to the group, but perhaps a little overmatched? I guess we’ll find out tonight.

5              MR CARROTTS – Absolutely nothing in any of his form suggests a form reversal. That’s what he would need.

6              MILLIONDOLLARDAD – Dakota J still a little banged up from a mishap last weekend. So, new driver taking over. Horse will need to go a lot faster to get any closer. That’s hard to predict.

7              CRUSH HANOVER – Not making much of an impact in this series so far. Still a big longshot, in my eyes. I will pass.

8              S MCKEE – He didn’t exactly have a great effort last week. Came off the rail and really had no go. Now, it’s the pole to post eight. I suppose he will try to get involved a little earlier? If not, will be too far back to threaten.

9              JERRYTONE – He’s probably the key to the race, because he has speed. Joe Lee sticks here and is almost guaranteed to send him. I’m not sure he wants to cut the mile, but many of his efforts are better than anybody else in here.

10           MASTER CONRAD – Does post 10 even really matter to him? He gets away last anyway. Will just try to hope for the usual mayhem and try to pick up the pieces. Hasn’t worked too well of late.

Race 2

1              IDEAL CLASSIC – Yes, I can see the class drop and I like the post relief too! But, it is she going to wake back up and deliver a quality performance tonight? Your guess is as good as mine.

2              SO DELIGHTFUL – As expected, she took the aggressive route last week and I guess those fractions were just too much. Got tired. Drew another good inner post, so that helps. Maybe a slightly different trip would work? Maybe.

3              KNOW YOUR ROLL – Not bad lately, but not enough to find a way to win. With that said, she can be used underneath in the gimmicks, but probably not on top. Price should still be okay.

4              ALKIPPE – Seems like she needs lots of things to go her way, and you never know when that can happen. Tetrick still handing around, but he called this mare “temperamental” before. Let’s see how the trip goes tonight.

5              GREYSTONE NATALIO – Took her act to the Ridge for an up-and-down class roll. Even went favored last time and had a tough trip. She likes it here too, so I’m not surprised to see her back. She’s in for the tag. Definitely a factor for Joe B.

6              DRESDEN – The Cleary barn is always dangerous, especially on a drop like this. She beat a decent field in that one win over at Pocono and this doesn’t look as tough. Let’s expect her to wake back up and deliver a big one.

7              I CHOOSE YOU – Barn’s got two in and they both have a big chance. This mare looks like pure speed, so no question about the strategy. She will be blasting out, and is a threat to go all the way. Also in for the tag. Hard to leave out.
