The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Race 1

1              YACHT SEELSTER – Regressed into another odd mistake last week. He never used to break! Gets another key inside post to give it another go. Hopefully, the price will be a little bigger, if you bet. It’s risky, but must be considered.

2              DELIGHTFUL TERROR – The Burke Brigade seems poised for a very big night. They have many in, in good spots, and several that are in the sale. That’s important to your handicapping. Had tough trip last time. Bounces back?

3              PALOMAR – The Pal passed a couple of them at the end last week. That’s probably a good sign that he’s ready to return to better form. He kind of floats in and out of form. If the price is right, he’s worth using too! Maybe.

4              BET NINTEEN – I just don’t have a real handle on this horse yet. He’s bounced up and down in price. Beat the 50’s handily. Found the 75’s tougher. But, in defense, he was used pretty hard. Corey will just have to make it easier.

5              ISLANDSPECIALMAJOR – I’ll keep him on the longshot list for now. I think he needs some class relief. Eventually.

6              PARTY WHIP – Note the barn change here. And this crew does good work in that category. They’re aiming a little high with the Meadows invader, but you never know. Maybe he’ll be a fit? If not, he will drop in class later on.

7              ODDS ON DELRAY – He’s worked his way pretty high in class, and now he gets toughest post test in a while. Scotty Z may have decision to make. Leave or wait and settle? It’s a tough call. Horse is pretty sharp right now. What price?

8              REVOLVER N – By now, I think we know his game. When he’s in the mood, he’s capable of sweeping the field. He’s done it twice, at 72-1 and 52-1. Won’t be anywhere near those odds tonight. Will just hope for hot pace up front.

Race 2

1              GIBUS – Gets a little bit of a break from the post gods tonight. The pole is interesting post for a one-way closer like him. It will be up to Mr. Wisher to avoid the ‘ol Meadowlands shuffle and stay out of trouble. But, it’s possible!

2              ROLL WITH DOM – Pretty durable! And he likes to win. Both plusses in my book. I have no idea how to compare that Open class in Maine with a claimer here. I do know he will have to go faster. Went fast enough at Plainridge. Maybe.

3              ELECTRIC WESTERN – On the comeback trail off a freshening. Sure looks like his first start back was better than the second. It’s usually the other way around! Gets a key inner post here to just sit and stalk. Let’s see how it goes.

4              SAMMY THE BULL N – Didn’t make much of an impact in first go here. I would be hard pressed to make a strong case for a big turnaround, but they do happen once in a while. Horse showed finishing ability at Spa. Maybe here too?

5              CAPTAIN HILL – Hot property at the claim box. But, coming off a real clunker. So, I don’t really know what to expect tonight. Didn’t even get week off after that one. Right back in! For last year’s winning driver of the MLK Pace.

6              CASINO BAGS ANSO – Burned some betting money over last two starts, with a lame scratch sandwiched in between. How do we read into that? Looks to me like his best weapon is speed. I see closers to the inside. Send him King!

7              PARKLANE JET – Ran into that buzzsaw called Chicken Nugget last week. So, Jet’s effort was good. Keeps getting stuck with these outside posts, because of the price he enters for. They hurt! And you can clearly see that here.

8              ACES ROCK – MIA for several weeks, so that’s a big problem for me. Barn usually doesn’t show up here without power, so they better have this guy cranked and ready. Mark S would love to hear that before he gets the lines.

9              UNDERTAKER – I like his chances tonight, even from the bad post. Mike Cruse can steer one, but he will be tested tonight with this 10YO. Horse can show a little speed, and he’s going to need it. Hope for decent price.

10           SONIC FLARE – Simply because the barn is ON FIRE right now, we’ll tab this one a tepid morning line favorite. All the way down from Canada for this. He’s won here before. That’s a big edge. Just has to overcome the post, Mr. Tharps!
