The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Race 1

1              ALL ABOUT RUSTY – Barn’s got two in here, and they both look like longshots. Rusty doesn’t win too often, and seems to need everything to go exactly right for him. That’s hard to count on, even from the rail. Trainer: All three of mine had a good week! Rusty and Shark will need to get some sort of trip. The big track should be positive for both.

2              STORMONT CZAR A – Was nice to see the 11YO warhorse dig in and fight for his new barn last week! That’s the way it’s done! Transitions over to the claimers now and we can expect to see that big speed again. Possible repeater. Trainer: What a pleasant surprise he was last week! We wanted a flat line, so Troy just him have his way and it worked out. Pleased with how he came out of it, and he’s in the same routine this week. He’s a “challenging” horse to deal with.

3              TRICK CARD – Has picked up two checks since that claim last month. Not bad. He’s been finishing well, but maybe needs a touch more burst to get home on top. The inner post helps keep him close. Not totally out of it. A Mac on!

4              SHARKNADO – Down from Monti where his form looks just fair. I guess I’d be surprised if he won here. Pass.

5              IDEAL TYSON A – Finally put it all together over at Pocono. Nice upset win pays the bills for a little while. That was first win of the year for the horse and sometimes that lightbulb on angle works. He could fire right back in a spot like this.

6              UNCLE COZ – Lots of fresh faces in this race and here’s another one, coming up from the Ocean. Was in decent form there for a while, and we can give him a pass for the post eight start. Interesting pickup for new pilot. Might send.

7              BUGGER BRUISER – I know he doesn’t win too often, but on drops like this, he becomes a lot more dangerous. Can’t fault that good early speed, so we know he’s sending. Just needs to find a way to try harder at end for win, not 2nd.

8              ALWAYS A FORCE – Worked his way right up the ladder and was still holding his own. This is sizable drop back down, but he gets stuck landing an outside post. Owns that one good move, so timing and trip are critical. Hard to leave out.

9              MISTER HAT – Also moving out of the Trackmaster race to this claimer, but he got no love from the post gods, being in for the $10,000. Would have to sweep the field from last and I don’t usually endorse that.

Race 2

1              CARUSO – Yes, he will drive you crazy at times, but I do think he’s one of the better horses in this race. Provided he trots! That’s the part I can’t guarantee. That’s up to the Hall-of-Fame guy in the sulky seat. He will do his best.

2              MON AMOUR – Not a whole lot going his way over the past month or so. Did have that one win, in nice time, earlier here this year. So, he could end up with a nice trip in this spot. These are the kinds of surprise ones Ake get home.

3              DEE’S RED DELICIOUS – Corey did everything right with Dee last week and the horse just didn’t have it. Yes, I can see the class drop, and recently-added Lasix, but I do not like what I see out on the track right now. I will let him beat me.

4              DUCHESSPEDIA – We can easily give her a pass for that last one out of post 10. And she really wasn’t bad. Trond drove aggressively before that to crank out a nice win. That’s the blueprint for victory again. Will give #1 a good test.

5              FOCUS POCUS – Finds his way back to Club Med for Team Schadel. He had several good starts here back in the winter. If you just ignore that last miscue, he fits perfectly in here too! Might offer some value as well. I wouldn’t leave out.

6              SERMON – For the most part, Kasper F has done good work, keeping this guy trotting. And, they’ve aimed very high against those killers. This should be somewhat easier, but he will need the right trip coming from behind. Maybe.

7              SEVEN NATION ARMY – Really don’t know what to do with this fella tonight. He’s been battling away in some stakes and just picking up checks. This is probably a maintenance start between legs. Tough post won’t help the cause.
