The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands handicapper

Race 1

1   SAILBOAT HANOVER – First of three in here for the Burke Brigade, and this one’s coming back off a quick freshening. Not sure what happened over at Yonkers, but he will definitely need this. Pass for now, and watch for later.

2   CLAYTONS BETTOR N – After a good long run of strong efforts, he finally tossed in that clunker with the tough trip. So, barn gave him extra week off. That’s a good thing! Fires back here against a pretty good field. I’ll use under.

3   FLYINGEVENBETTOR N – This is actually a class drop for this one. That was a monster mile he’s coming out of, and there’s no Ruthless Hanover’s in here. It won’t be easy vs. the Burke Trio, but I feel he will improve tonight. Use!

4   TRU LOU – Even Yannick said he was “disappointed” with Lou two back. He drove him a bit differently in the same race as #3 last week. So far, he’s just lacked the stretch pop you need to win here. Better find some soon! YG’s choice!

5   ACES ROCK – Took control down at Philly and simply scooted away from the field when asked. That was good confidence booster, but this is a big step up, back on the big track. I know he likes it in front, so expect some speed.

6   QUAGMIRE BLUE CHIP – Wasn’t able to repeat that sterling rally when he paid $150 to win. I’m not as sure about the pace scenario in here tonight. He could end up a little too far back again. Looking like big price again.

7   THE CANDYMAN CAN – He’s the key to the race, but wasn’t Yannick’s choice from the outer post. But, we should still speed here. Both tries here were good. He is the one to fear, but must prove he “wants” to win.

8   NO QUARTER – I’ve been a little disappointed with this one here so far. Now, he moves back to tough post and I would need to see a lot more before I could endorse again.

9   ENERGYZONE HANOVER – Post nine and nothing upon arrival. Post nine again and probably the same thing coming.

Race 2

1   FRANKANDJOANNE – Dexter did everything he could to try and motivate Frank into a big rally and it just wasn’t there. Gets a lucky draw with same pole post, but it doesn’t help him too much. Needs a much bigger effort.

2   JOHNNY MARSHALL – The one try here was just dull. Back for another try and in need of much more speed.

3   KARMA WINS – Not sure why he made that break in first go here. I’m willing to forgive that. This is a field begging to be beaten, so let’s give him another shot at a square price. Hoping to snap that long losing skid. Maybe.

4   VICTORYDAZE WILWIN – It’s been a long time since he won, so I will simply pass, even in a field like this.

5   GRANDPA DON – Can he win? Absolutely! Should he win? Probably. Is he reliable? No! And, don’t expect that big of a price from this perfect post for his style. A Mac takes a turn in sulky seat and probably only needs to stay close.

6   NOTORIOUS – Looks like another “project” horse for Team Silva. They excel at this! Don’t be shocked if this one comes up with a suddenly improved effort. I’m expecting it! And if he takes tote action, hop on board for sure.

7   ROCKAHOLIC – Maybe one of these nights, he’s going to get lucky and run by a field. It almost happened a few weeks ago. But, I don’t envision him outkicking #5 home for the cash. Demand fair price, if you do.

8   JUST WAVE GOODBYE – It’s really hard to get excited about his chances, looking at that current form. I’ll just pass.

9   SHARKNADO – Was last seen here chasing Durant home, but it was an improved effort for this one. Any repeat of that type effort puts him in play, but it’s still a tough, outside post. Good luck with that.

10 WINDSONG GORGEOUS – 13YO warhorse is back to the scene of his lifetime best. He showed some good speed in finale at The Ridge, so why not take a shot here? Send him and let’s see what he’s got left.
