The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — July 16, 2022

Race 1

1             LEON DAVID – No doubt he’s been sharp of late, and he took advantage of those lower conditions on the drop. But, now it’s back to the wolves on the hike. And most of the others are dropping. That doesn’t usually work out.

2             BACKSTREET SHADOW – Is it finally time for him to step it up again? That’s a good question. Paced his last two miles in sub 1:48, so you would think that will be good enough. I’m still not sure. A few others are sitting on big races too!

3             MAYHEM HANOVER – Yes, he’s one of the many taking a slight dip in class, but I’m not sure it’s enough. I’ll wait.

4             ROCKIN THE ACES – The other “class-hiker” off the win. The Saunders stable gets stuffed in a real tough spot here.

5             BILLY CLYDE – Oh how confidence builders do wonders. After the strong, down-the-road win, Billy came right back and did it again! So, there is no question about the strategy here. But, if anybody roughs him up, watch out late.

6             VANDANTA N – Did not make much of an impact in first go here. He will need some additional class relief.

7             WES DELIGHT – Third start back off the layoff. Connections said he would need a race or two. Did finish up okay in some traffic last week. Should offer a nice price alternative in situation like this. I just wish he had better post.

8             MULLINAX – He’s worked his way up too high in class. Looks like a longshot to me, from this outside starting slot.

9             BRONX SEELSTER – He’s one of the mystery horses in here. But, I always wonder if he’s a true big track horse? That, plus post nine, in a wild speed affair make him a tough play. If he can overcome it, God bless. It won’t be easy.

10           KEEP ON ROCKING A – Up from Delaware and into a seemingly impossible spot. Post position blues too!

Race 2

1             RAISED BY LINDY – That was some stretch slugfest between her and Manon last week. I still think she lost that photo, but oh well. It was strong effort. She’s firmly on Road to Oaks. They have her in a good place. Must deal with #4,6.

2             DELILAH HANOVER – For the most part, she’s been playing “chaser” at the top stakes level. I do like the post, so T Mac can just be patient and let her make her own trip. Will just hope that the faves mix it up somehow.

3             PEYTON HANOVER – Actually did a nice job over at Yonkers. When you start from post eight and pick up a check, that’s a good thing! She will be looking to do the same here and it will assuredly be from off the pace again.

4             FASHION SCHOONER – I’m really torn here. I love both #1 and this lass. She HAD to need that last one, after missing time by design. Jim C knows how to get one ready for first Saturday in August. Another step forward tonight.

5             BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL – Somebody’s got to be the longshot in here, so this lass is it. I doubt she can beat these.

6             MANON – How good is she? Not sure we’ve answered that question yet. I was uber-impressed with her late explosion last week. Proved a lot of things! Handled the mile track. Was able to rate and be versatile. Extra weapons. Gets a new driver too!
