The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Edison Hatter, Meadowlands Handicapper — Saturday April 8, 2023 — Saturday Early Double

Race 1

1   ONE LUCKY DUDE – Raced well two back to finish second against Amateur foes, but couldn’t get a whole lot going last time out against tougher from an outside post. Gets a drop in class here, but so does a large majority of this field.

2   HES ROCKIN RALPHIE – Just finished second last week on the class drop and was in contention for some time. However, he couldn’t show a whole lot two and three back when he was last seen against these types.

3   AS ALWAYS – There isn’t a whole lot going for him in the recent form, but he is absolutely plummeting down the class ladder currently. This is horse than won seven times last year, including in 1:50.1 here. Surely he’ll wake up in this one.

4   MCERLEAN – The veteran 14-year-old was only seen five times last season and will start tonight off of a near year-long layoff after the lame scratch. Didn’t love the way he finished off that Q. I’ll pass and watch one from him tonight.

5   MARCO BEACH – Just missed last week here at the Meadowlands when finishing third, but losing by just a neck against tougher. Gets further class relief tonight, draws well, and has a big chance with a trip in this one.

6   JK’S ON THE MOVE – Won five starts ago down at Freehold against tougher, but hasn’t been able to show much in the last four starts. He has a lot of outside posts in a row, however. We’ll see how he takes to the big track tonight.

7   MAJORLY SEXY A – He has now made two breaks in his last four starts, but he is continuing the sustained move down the class ladder tonight. He has gotten a pair of checks in the other two recent races where he has stayed flat.

8   LIKE A SHADOW – Shows a pair of decent lines in those last two starts out at the Meadows as he moves to the Paul Stratton barn tonight. Has this outside post to work from and has had nearly a month off since his last race.

9   GRATEFUL KISS – Just missed last week against a group of claimers and was able to be a lot closer to the pace with an inside post for the first time in a few starts. Does move back outside on the gate in this one tonight.

Race 2:

1   JODY – She hasn’t been seen now in a month and a half, but she qualified very well last week and has put together several very solid miles here at the Meadowlands so far this meet. Gets some class relief and has a big chance here.

2   TWO PROUD – She finished off her three-year-old season last year with her first two career wins and has picked up where she left off with two solid efforts so far this season. Takes on older in this one, but will look to keep rolling.

3   FOX VALLEY EXPLOIT – Trips and posts haven’t quite work out in her favor in the last two down at Dover, but he win just three starts ago here at the Meadowlands and has been solid on the big track. Realistic contender in this one.

4   VILLAGE JADE – She’s been able to pick up a couple of checks in the recent starts over at Yonkers and she has been facing tougher as well in some of those recent starts. Returns to the big track where she’s solid in recent tries.

5   DISTURBED HANOVER – Hasn’t gotten a whole lot going in recent starts down at Dover, but she does have eights wins in the past two seasons. I’ll take a pass and watch one from her to see how the form translates to the big track.

6   SWEET TREASURE – Last two haven’t gone her way over in the Match Maker Series over at Yonkers, but she finally finds conditioned company in this one tonight after several Stakes tries. Looks to have a serious chance in this one.

7   WINE N DINE ME – Won well last time out against that TM group from Post 10 off a really tough trip in her third start off the bench. Finds a tougher field here, but will look to take a step forward and work out a clean trip to be in the mix.
