The most interesting betting race at Laurel’s Friday card is a waiver maiden-claiming sprint going six furlongs for which Justwaveandsmile (9-5), is a deserving favorite.
AKA “the Racetrack Wave,” he took pressure throughout and was still there at the wire in a final quarter that went in 24 2/5. He gets five pounds plus a switch to a live apprentice and his Thoro-Graph figures are superior.
But there is an underrated speed horse that could be three or four times the price and could trip-out given race dynamics and outside position. Deschackled (12-1) hounded the favorite last time and appears likely to again.
In the event of a duel, Toy (9-2) can pick them all up late. And what to do with first-time starts from the Perkins Jr. and Trombetta shedrows, a couple f guys that have this kind ready? A real puzzler and that’s why we’re going in a different direction.
It’s not often you’ll find Trevor McCarthy on a live mount at 12, but that’s the case here with Charm City Band who can be as fast as McCarthy needs him to be. Or, from his outside draw, can track the favorite and anyone who challenges the choice, moving to challenge when McCarthy says so.
Check out DEC 27, RACE 4 on the HRI homepage and note how McCarthy aboard ‘Charm’ for the first time, the colt’s second start, and was just sitting up against him as the passed the opening quarter-mile in 22-flat.
McCarthy went on with it in the lane opening three lengths before getting run down by a late rallier. Last year’s leading Laurel rider can be a bit more patient and watch things develop in front of him. Will the new tack work? At near 8-1 ante post, I’ll pay to find out.
Check the replay and see what you think in terms of his early speed. In addition to a possible win play, we will key-box exactas including the two horses above and will watch the tote for clues re the two newcomers.
