The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Note that the General George a big-time local sprint but 44 renewals has made it a popular betting spot each winter. Per usual, the race attracts national interest and two such animals, Firenze Fire and Mind Control, are consider probable starters in the demanding 7-furlong renewal.

The two favorites are Grade 1 stakes winners, based primarily New York, need no introduction and loom the probable favorites but there’s a local horse with upset on his mind–our mind, anyway.

When last seen in the G3 Toboggan at Aqueduct, I was wondering why Still Having Fun was so close to the pace, battling for the lead for about five of the 7 furlongs. After his prior, in which he was a strong, too-late second on this oval, I thought this must be a prep. Might be on to something…

Check out his prior start on the Laurel Park Video, DEC 7, RACE 8. To go along with the visually impressive effort is the fact that he usually needs a run before his best go, and the winter start was his first race since the G1 Churchill Downs Sprint on the Derby undercard.

The gelded 5-year-old worked a bullet this weekend and the dual Laurel stakes winner will be reunited with his partner from the past, Feargal Lynch, who was in the boot two back. It’s too early for a firm selection so let’s call it a longshot lean. We need at least 6-1 to get involved straight.
