The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Today’s Gulf feature going as the day’s ninth race is an overnight handicap for fillies and mares on the main track at one mile..

The two best fillies in the race, Maryquitecontrary (5-2) and Beth’s Dream (1-1) is the timeless struggle on which much of the handicapping process is based; class vs. speed figures.

Beth’s Dream is in raging form for Victor Barboza, with consecutive top figures on the Thoro-Graph scale. She’s 57 days fresh, is 6-for-her–last-7 starts at today’s trip. Further, her works are on schedule.

As for ‘Mary,’ the question is whether she’s lost a step at 5 which is hard to know given the company she’s kept. After two money placings in G2 and G3 events, she was overmatched last out in Keeneland’s G1 Madison.

‘Mary’ is 7-for-11 in Hallandale, owns fast back figures, and is a perfect 2-for-2 at the trip. Eddie Plesa excels with allowance types and is 17% profitable in 2024, Edgard Zayas takes the call.

We’ll take the little value offered with ‘Mary’, an exacta box with the favorite and adding money shot with turf to dirt Charlie’s Wish (9-2), a profitable 22% angle for David Fawkes.
