The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL. March 24, 2021  — Which member of a surprisingly large field of 11 entered in Saturday’s G1 Florida Derby will have something in common with Always Dreaming, Nyquist, Orb, Big Brown, Barbaro or Monarchos?

That’s why horse races are run.

The question will be partially answered at Gulfstream Park in three days, and definitively by post time of the feature race at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 1. Parenthetically, none are hoping to replicate the history made by Maximum Security two long years ago.

Although none of Saturday’s entrants would mind being tossed in the same “Test of the Champion” bucket with Tiz the Law or Empire Maker, no race in America has the distinction of being in the same stratosphere as the Derby, “America’s Race.”

Here, then, are the post positions were drawn at 12:15 pm today and are listed in post position order with early line odds:

1-NOVA RAGS (12-1)

3-JIRAFALES (30-1)

6-SIGILOSO (30-1)

10-SPEILBERG (4-1)

11-PAPETU (15-1)

So, will Greatest Honour become the first horse in history to sweep the three graded Road to the Derby preps offered by Gulfstream Park? Will Todd Pletcher add to his record five Florida Derby victories with Known Agenda, or will Bob Baffert go to his bench stretch and pick off a Grade 1 with Spielberg?

While thinking that over, consider that Gulfstream is offering guaranteed pools of $750,000 in the Late Pick Five and Pick 4, in addition to a mandatory payout in the Rainbow Six expected to draw a pool in excess of $10 million.

Happy handicapping!

  1. John. Hope you are well. Quite a card for Florida Derby Day. I respect the Shug horse but I really like Spielberg in this spot. A good break is essential but he has a great cruising speed and he should be 7-2, 4-1. Taking a shot here.

  2. Pete, downloaded card last night and it is formidable. I never dissuade anyone who attempts to beat heavily bet favorites unless they are interested in no hopers on paper. Off the top, we believe five of the 11 entered can win and, of course, Spielberg is one of them. His last was great but I admit I would feel better about him if that big effort came over a fast track.

But I also believe one cannot allow perfect to be the enemy of the good. A safe and speedy journey to all…
