NFL DRAFT HOME ALONE

By Marc Lawrence — The 2020 NFL draft will go down as the first-ever virtual draft. While it wasn’t the same watching players who just had their name called marching on stage and bear hugging Roger Goodell, it was interesting seeing coaches and players camped at home. Players had been asked to limit home gatherings to six people, but in many cases, it was clear that additional attendees were standing – and celebrating – off camera. Agents could also be seen in the players’ homes. One coach who absolutely respected the rules was the Arizona Cardinals’ Kliff Kingsbury, who sat alone on a white couch in the expansive open living room of his multimillion-dollar pad, his loafers perched on a contemporary coffee table. If you thought Kingsbury was pulling off the flexiest of NFL coach flexes, well, you were not alone. Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, whose own home had a similar patio, told reporters: “Kliff had that thing set up like it was a movie for himself.” Meanwhile, the great receiver class of 2020 lived up to its billing. Eight receivers flew off the board in the first 35 overall picks, the highest total in the common draft era; 26 were drafted through five rounds; and a total of 36 were drafted overall, tying the record set in 2003 for the most in a seven-round draft. The race is on as to which major sports franchise will come back first. The leading contender had been the NBA but they appear to be pulling their horns in while awaiting a buy-sign for the coronavirus curve to flatten out. MLB insists there will be a 2020 season. The question is when, where and how? The optimism is guarded and cautious and laden with caveats. It’s a contradictory existence in which the baseball world is doing everything it can to prepare for games without any firm plan in place for when or where those games will be played. Nearly every team has guaranteed baseball-operations employees payment through May 31. Rest assured, we’ll have a clearer picture of which direction baseball is headed by then.

From the 2020 Playbook Football Preview Guide Magazine: Purdue led the nation when freshmen made 32.3% starts for the Boilermakers. On the opposite end of the ladder, Air Force and Ohio U did not have a single freshman start a game in 2019.
