The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

According to David Grening of Daily Racing Form, recent Los Alamitos Derby winner Game Winner will miss the Travers due to contracting a virus.

There is no word as to whether Bob Baffert will shift gears and head to Bensalem PA for the Pennsylvania Derby next month.

Baffert won that event the last two years with West Coast and McKenzie, respectively.

Owner Gary West also has Haskell winner Maximum Security pointed to the Midsummer Derby. That colt was supposed to be on the Saratoga grounds two weeks ago but remains at his Monmouth Park base.

Trainer Jason Servis said a decision as to whether he will run in the Travers will be made by August 20. Good thing; that’s the day Travers entries are to be drawn.

Maximum Security is coming off a hard fought win over Mucho Gusto, a grueling head to head stretch match with the talented Mucho Gusto on a hot afternoon on the Jersey Shore.

The defection of Game Winner, also owned by West, could force Servis’ hand. Ultimately, it is West’s call to make.
