The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Handicappers will not need a road map to lead them to the favorite in the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf in today’s10th race from Hallandale. Certainly not based on her most recent victory in the Claiming Crown Tiara.

In it, the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee improved her Gulfstream record to a lofty (6) 3-2-0, her seventh win and one placing in 11 tries at this trip. Joseph and Tyler G are a very effective team and the trainer is a profitable 26% with this spacing.

But before taking a short price on Sugar Fix (8-5), we will allow Kelsey Cross’s (4-1) to sway our betting approach.

Never looking the part of a winner at any point in the G3 Suwanee River, her fortunes didn’t improve as he rally from 11th of 12 forced her to race wide through the lane and she never found her best stride until far too late.

See what you think. Check the Going Gulfstream Video on the HRI homepage: Gulfstream Park, December 18, Race 5.

Subsequently, Patrick Biancone went old school with a 7-furlong breeze in a stamina-building 1:26.40, followed by a half mile blowout seven days later. She has more tactical gas than she showed last out and should take advantage of today’s improved post draw.

The early line should hold if the race stays in tact. Betting Kelsey’s Cross to win at 4-1 or greater and key-boxing her first and second with the favorite, co-dropdown Sister Otoole (5-2), and the “other” Joseph runner, long-winded Lovely Luvy (6-1), attracting Junior Alvarado.
