INDIANA MAKES SENSE

Anyone surprised that Godolphin has a deep bench? No Maxfield? No problem.

Trainer Brad Cox picked the right spot to break Shared Sense’s stakes maiden, scoring in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand, a rare midweek feature.

Needing 1:49.46 to get the 1-1/8 miles done, Street Sense with a strong final furlong of 12:23 took the Indiana Derby by three comprehensive lengths over Major Fed as a 5-2 favorite.

The winner and runnerup exchanged light bumps about three-eighths from home. James Graham claimed foul against the winner but the result was allowed to stand as posted.

The win, partnered by stable regular Florent Geroux, garnered 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points. Back in third was Necker Island, a strong effort after suffering through a troubled start and wide trip.

To date, Shared Sense has not been nominated to the big dance in Septemember.

A race before the Indiana Derby, the team of Cox and Geroux won the G3 Indiana Oaks (G3) with Shedaresthedevil. Not a bad day’s work.
