The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

An interesting optional claimer at 8.5 furlongs in turf in the Sunday finale is a good way to close the race week in Hallandale.

And the most compelling of these for us is Smithwick’s Spice (5-1) who is both progressive with competitive figures to this group and is a Horse for Course (4) 2-2-0.

This hard-hitting gelded 8-year-old is classy, too, having a a turf sprint stakes at Tampa last out for Douglas Dunn and is a profitable 21% hooking up with Daniel Centeno, in South Florida for this, his only scheduled ride.

Further, if adding front bandages, so much the better, as he owns a $2.28 ROI according to Thoro-Graph stats in that scenario. Given recovery time, we love that he meets weaker stretching to his best trip.

Taking Smithwick’s Spice to win at 7-2 or greater and key-boxing trifectas first and second with Tatanka (7-2), Space Launch (6-1) and Rock the Stars (10-1), all exiting the same key race that produced two winners from as many starters.
