The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

It’s easy to find the logical horses with the ability to win today’s eighth race feature, the G3 Tropical Turf. But getting a read on trainer intent is another matter.

Given the various form cycles, and the likelihood of this being a bridge race for something, which is definitely the case with Largent (9-5), whose major goal is the JAN 29 Pegasus Turf, what to do?

:Largent is coming off a 350-day layoff, which is not a problem when Todd Pletcher is tightening the girth. Pletcher’s batting 42% at this meet going into Friday’s races.

He has the ability to win on class and is pole sitting with leading rider Luis Saez. But the trainer certainly is not looking to reach bottom here.

Have no idea what Chad Brown has in mind with Value Proposition (8-5), who is closest to Largent on ability. Coming off a reasonable six-week layup, and considering his best races have been two-turn miles on turf, he rates the lean.

But Clear Vision (6-1), Phat Man (5-1) and Flying Scotsman ((12-1) are all intriguing and are alternatives to the short-priced choices. The Going Gulfstream Video you want to see is ‘Proposition’s’ run at Monmouth Park, SEP 4, Race 12.

We’re going on record with Value Proposition to win, no price restrictions. See tomorrow’s HRI value-play section for vertical plays.
