The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Marc Lawrence, – Happy New Year to you and yours. As usual, we kick it off in style today with both of this season’s College Football Playoff contests in what amounts to the final iteration of the four-team College Football Playoff when the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines (13-0) play the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1) in the Rose Bowl while the No. 2 Washington Huskies (13-0) face the No. 3 Texas Longhorns (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl. Winners from each game convene in Houston for the National Championship Game on Jan. 8. Let’s hope what happened to previously undefeated Florida State, in its 63-3 annihilation to Georgia, happens to the three remaining undefeated teams today (Liberty joins the fray are 13-0). We certainly deserve better. For what it’s worth, undefeated bowl teams on New Year’s Day are 15-12-1 SU and 15-13 ATS since 1980 when facing foes with at least one loss on the season, including 9-5 ATS against foes coming off a double-digit win. That could be good news for the Huskies today. Enjoy the day, and the games as well.
