If handicappers remember that experience is always an attribute, there is a chance that value will be available in Thursday’s third race, Anthracite (5-1).
Three year old Arrogate colt has had three starts under disparate conditions,, the last two beging interesting an meaningful.
Following a sprint debut, he made a Tapeta Track and two turn debut in which he showed speed that was unseen on debut. He was hounded head to head throughout and understandably tired.
At that point, trainer Joe Orseno switched to turf, a race in which Anthracite lost all winning chance soon at the break: See Gulfstream Park, APR 29, Race 7.
Still, he managed to pass horses with a mid-race run and finished in front of eight of the 11 rivals. These two change-of-pace efforts are too tempting to ignore here.
Taking Anthracite to win at 3-1 or greater and coal quinellas with turf meant newcomers Stat (2-1) and Sha Tin (7-2); the former has nature in his corner, the latter, nurture.
