The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

11 WHIP STROKES = $100K

Edited Release — According to website HorseRacingPlanet.com, jockey David Egan, who upset Charlatan with Mishriff on Saturday was fined $100,000 for violating Saudi Arabian whip infractions when he struck the winner 11 times to ensure the victory.

The amount is 10% of Egan’s 10% share of the $10 million purse. Actually, the $100,000 fine is for one strike of the crop as 10 is the allowable maximum.

Further, the Saudi Jockey Club suspended the rider for two days.

Stipendiary steward Phil Tuck told HorseRacingPlanet.com: “We took into account that two hits were down the shoulder in the backhand position and considered that he used the whip 11 times behind the saddle. He had 10% of his prize-money deducted.”

The website also reports that Charlatan’s jockey, Hall of Famer Mike Smith, was suspended two days for allegedly interfering with Sleepy Eyes Todd about 100 meters from the start of the one-turn, nine-furlong race. Smith was hit with a nine-day ban and heavy fine in the inaugural running of the Saudi Cup in 2020, having to lose approximately $210,000, or 60% of his earnings from Midnight Bisou’s second-place finish.

  1. (1).Fírstly, I’m surprised, disappointed that there has been no response, comments about this enforcement of overdone whipping on a horse even as I wonder if anyone would have paid any attention to it if it were happening on a let’s say $ 3500 claimer at Golden Gate,California or even on a lesser visible track in a North Mid West state like Nebraska or Iowa. I mentioned a similar inexcusable atrocity happening in southern track a few days ago,,,without any note or punishment as the equine athlete got whipped, needlessly ,without gaining an inch. There Have to be parameters, even if in general terms. If an animal is tired, there AIN’T much that a jockey can do at the stretch,,short of hurting him/her !There have been preliminary studies on that ! Jockeys-,along with trainers/owners should be punished no matter where or in which races this nonsense happens !(2) When an handicapper -s main two pics come first and second,in any order ,like in a quinella, he/she should get credit x the cold exacta because not many horse players stick to a One sided,Cold Exacta: It’s asinine and it cuts on the % of cashing it in,Besides getting Value if the second choice beats the fav$. I’d rather get two or three exactas than hoping on just one favorite combo. Bet more but will secure a winning ticket as it happened on that previously Saudi Cup race where the third choice beat the fav,or as Mr Bernstein used to say, C-AB beat A-BC,,and at a good price ! Usually,I bet against the fav with second, third choice on top of it. So far,so good.. In races where I like the fav, besides betting it heavier to place,I box it with other 2,3 horses and hope that the second choice Won’t come in behind it,otherwise it gets boring and valueless.ie waste of time. Rarely play Verticals, only pick 3 s which might keep me interested in many ,too many right now, cheap claimers and maiden races where many times the existence of logic is missing or hiding somewhere.😷😷🍕🍻😷
