PEARLS FROM EARL

By Marc Lawrence — ESPN senior writer and MLB aficionado Tim Kurkjian recently retraced the career of Hall Of Fame manager Earl Weaver, who won 1,480 games, four pennants, and a World Series while winning 90 games 11 times. The irascible Weaver and his sharp tongue and bitter wit was also known for going jaw-to-jaw with many an umpire. One of Weaver’s best lines, though, came when Baltimore Orioles outfielder Pat Kelly decided to inform him he was going to become a minister. “Earl, I’m going to walk with the Lord,” Kelly said. To which Weaver replied, “I’d rather you walk with the bases loaded!” This from a man who once said “I think the National League has better biorhythms in July.” MLB misses him badly. Continue to RIP Earl.

Grinding Out The Profits
With Tom Brady moving to the NFC South with the Tampa Bay Bucs this season, the division becomes recorded setting. Brady, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Teddy Bridgewater have combined for 513 career regular-season wins. If all four start, as projected in Week 1, it would be the most combined wins – by 166 – by a division’s season-opening starters since 4-team divisions began in 2002.
