The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

IT PAYS VERY WELL TO CHEAT

By Marc Lawrence, PlaubookSports.com — So let’s see if I’ve got this right. You are suspended the first three games of the season, and then the final three games of the year, yet still haul down weekly, annual paychecks despite being sidelined for half of the campaign. Harbaugh agreed to a five-year, $36.7 million deal in 2022, but the coach and the school already had opened talks about an updated extension before the current scandal. Harbaugh’s annual base salary started at $7.05 million in 2022 and increased steadily to $7.63 million in 2026. Back in 2022, Michigan’s 43-22 victory over Purdue in Indianapolis gave Harbaugh $1.5 million in bonuses. That was composed of $1 million for the Big Ten title and $500,000 for surpassing the No. 2-ranked Wolverines into the College Football Playoff semifinals. He will not be able to add to his bonuses for that season except in the case that the Wolverines take home a national title, landing an extra $500,000. The sad fact of the matter, to us working 7 days a week for a living, is he does not even rank in the Top 10 of current college football coaches’ payroll lists, of which Alabama’s Nick Saban tops are $11.1 M per year. Look for ‘The Jaw’ to seek “safe harbor” and become an NFL head coach next season where the newest cheater can rub elbows with Bill Belichick, the king of cheaters. Something is not right with this picture.
