By Marc Lawrence — From this week’s PLAYBOOK Football Newsletter: Before you knee jerk and elect to back Florida today following their near-upset over Alabama last week, you might want to read on.
Teams who lose to Alabama yet cover the spread in the game have a tough time getting back up the following week. That’s confirmed by the fact that these teams are 17-26 ATS, including 8-19 ATS if they own a defense that surrenders more than 21.5 PPG.
In a rare move, the Gators were surprisingly rewarded by the pollsters, entering the Top-10 rankings despite coming off a loss. They’ll face a Vols squad that is 4-0-1 ATS in this series as a dog of 14 or more points. Tennessee is statistically improved in 2021 under new head coach Josh Heupel with 43 points, 420 offensive and 265 defensive yards per game this season, up 21 PPG, and 173 & 146 YPG offensively and defensively this year over last.
