The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

In a tweet late Friday afternoon, Los Alamitos Racetrack confirmed a Horse Race Insider exclusive and announced it indeed had hired Michael Wrona to succeed Ed Burgart, who will retire at the end of this year.

Burgart, a legendary media figure, has been calling Quarter-Horse races at the Orange County track for decades along with responsibilities as track handicapper and morning line oddsmaker.

Wrona called Thoroughbred races at Los Alamitos five years ago. Bobby Neuman had been calling Thoroughbred races at Los Al since 2016 and many assumed he would succeed Burgart at year’s end, until a sponsor intervened on Wrona’s behalf.

The former Santa Anita announcer will call races for both breeds starting in the winter of 2020.
